Fort honors past director John Vaughan

Post Date:07/23/2019 1:49 PM

Fort Concho will host a memorial program on Friday, August 9, for John Vaughan, past director of Fort Concho National Historic Landmark. Vaughan was director of the Fort from 1979-1998. Vaughan passed away on June 26, 2019.

All are invited to attend the program that will take place at the fort’s commissary building, near the intersection of Flipper St. and Burgess St., from 10 a.m.–11 a.m. The commissary is the oldest building at the fort, and thus the oldest in San Angelo. The building was among the first major restoration projects completed under John’s direction. Refreshments will be served.

Several former city colleagues, fort staff and volunteers will share their stories about John, his achievements, and his fort legacy that transformed the site over his near twenty-year career.

Fort Concho is located at 630 S. Oakes St. For more information, please call Fort Concho at 325-481-2646, or visit
