Furloughed employees eligible for grace period for water bills

Furloughed federal workers who are City of San Angelo water customers are encouraged to contact the Water Customer Service office to qualify for a special grace period on water bill payments for employees affected by the federal government shutdown.

Such workers should call 325-657-4323 to receive a 30-day extension of their payment deadline without penalties or interest charges. These customers will get instructions by phone about providing required proof of employment by the federal government.

Federal workers can also arrange extended payment plans for water bills that are more than 60 days overdue.

During the shutdown, which entered its 34th day today, about 800,000 federal employees nationwide are not being paid. Some are required to report to work without compensation.

Among the federal entities with a local presence that are affected by the shutdown are the Transportation Safety Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Internal Revenue Service. As of Thursday, five local federal employees had been granted 30-day extensions along with delinquency exemption for their water bills.
