Water disinfection reverts to chloramines

Post Date:06/30/2017 9:28 AM

The Water Utilities Department reverted back to using chloramines to disinfect the public water supply today.

The Water Department normally uses chloramine, a mix of ammonia and chlorine, to disinfect water. For most of June, the Water Department used only chlorine, also known as “free chlorine.” A temporary conversion from chloramines to free chlorine is a common yearly practice for municipal water systems. The move ensures water safety in pipelines by ridding mains of residual microscopic organic particles.

The use of chloramine and free chlorines is detailed in the 2017 Consumer Confidence Report, posted at cosatx.us/WaterUtilities. The report also includes other information about San Angelo’s water and its water utility.
