Flag-planting at Fairmount Cemetery
- Date: 11/05/2017 2:00 PM - 10:59 PM
- Location: Fairmount Cemetery
1100 W. Avenue N
San Angelo, Texas 76903
- Introduction: Volunteers are sought to plant American flags on veterans' graves prior to Veterans Day.
Friends of Fairmount Cemetery is seeking the community’s assistance in placing more than 1,400 American flags on the graves of veterans buried in the cemetery at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, in advance of Veterans Day.
The cemetery, located at 1120 W. Avenue N, will not host its traditional Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11, because of scheduling conflicts with many other planned local observances.
Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. It is observed each year on Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I.
Established in 1893, Fairmount Cemetery is the final resting place for veterans of the Battle of San Jacinto, the Mexican War, the Indian Wars, the Civil War, both world wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Several buffalo soldiers who served at Fort Concho are also buried at Fairmount, a designated Texas Historic Cemetery.
Friends of Fairmount Cemetery is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the enhancement and beautification of the 57-acre cemetery.
“We would greatly appreciate your participation to honor those who have served their country so honorably,” said Martha Visney, a Friends of Fairmount board member.
